Stellar Nursery

This quilt is inspired by a NASA photo called Mountains of Creation, which lies at the eastern edge of the giant stellar nursery W5, about 7000 light years from the constellation Cassiopeia. You can see the inspirational photo here:

It is 54" x 52". The gas cloud applique is made from Angelina fibers and is covered with black veil and quilted. The black blocks on the border sides have black-on-black constellations embroidered on them. I completed this quilt in 2008.

This quilt was juried into 2009 Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival. The judges liked the basic design, but one of the comments noted that the border detracted from the overall design. Now that I look at it, I can tell they are right. A black binding would have probably been sufficient. I plan to make more space-based quilts.
