    Stellar Nursery

This quilt was juried into 2009 Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival. The judges liked the basic design, but one of the comments noted that the border detracted from the overall design. Now that I look at it, I can tell they are right. A black binding would have probably been sufficient. I plan to make more space-based quilts.

This quilt is now home. Funny, you know, I can see lots of things about this quilt that I should have done differently that I did not see before I submitted it. I think this is an excellent lesson for me. I knew the quilting wasn't great, but the design also has some flaws. I will chalk this one up to my learning journey. Cheers.

    Mer Folk Fantasy

    From the album: BJ's quilts

This quilt is about 24 by 32 inches. The background is pieced and the water is highlighted a little with paint, the shell is painted, appliqued, and then quilted with decorative stitches, the coral is free-motion thread painted, and the small fish, small shell, star fish and jelly fish are all machine embroidered. Her hair is embellished with silver metallic thread in free motion and the quilt is entirely free-motion quilted on my domestic Bernina. I added hot fix crystals to her hair and some of the fantasy seaweeds cut from the Hoffman challenge fabric. It was fun to make. The photo is not very good (it's really nice and square, and the crystals aren't quite so bold) but it's the only one I have. The quilt is currently traveling with the 2010 Hoffman Challenge show.

I made this quilt for my brother-in-law in memory of his dear wife Joan. They built their home by the James River. It originally was going to be for his church, but he decided after he saw the design that he wanted to keep it in her memory for his own wall. I made it to his requested suggestions. The mountains on the left and the river are all pieced in. The mountains on the right are appliqued, as is the cross and rhe rock. The three streamed river, representing the Trinity, is also pieced in, though the bottom of the mountains on the left bank are appliqued. The sunstreams are painted on using a dry brush and Shiva paintstix and heatset.

I designed this quilt for a church wall hanging for the celebration of Christmas. All free-motion quilting on my Bernina 200E machine. This quilt was published by their request in "Love of Quilting" Nov/Dec 08. 36" x 68"

This little quilt was such FUN to make. I took a class from Laura Wasilowski and this is the result. Way far away from my usual kinds of quilts, thus the name. Made from Laura's hand-dyed fabrics. It is 15 x 15 inches, and is free motion quilted using my Bernina 200E.

Hoffman/Sulky 2009 challenge quilt. Set in the mid 1920s. I designed the vases, the flowers on the dress and belt and redesigned a royalty free dog design and embroidered them from Sulky threads. The quilting is all free motion on my Bernina 200E using the BSR upgrade. This is in memory of my mother in law who would have been in her early twenties about the time this scene is set. This is 27 x 40 inches. This quilt is currently on tour with Hoffman 2009 Challenge.

This was my 2008 Hoffman Challenge quilt which just returned home to me from its Hoffman tour. I spent three years in Japan decades ago where I studied Japanese flower arranging (Ikebana) and received my fourth year Ikebana certificate while there. This quilt was inspired by the fabric used in the challenge and my years in Japan. It is 25" x 28". I free-motion quilted this on my Bernina 200E upgraded with a stitch regulator.

    Stellar Nursery

    From the album: BJ's quilts

This quilt is inspired by a NASA photo called Mountains of Creation, which lies at the eastern edge of the giant stellar nursery W5, about 7000 light years from the constellation Cassiopeia. You can see the inspirational photo here: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegaller...eature_483.html It is 54" x 52". The gas cloud applique is made from Angelina fibers and is covered with black veil and quilted. The black blocks on the border sides have black-on-black constellations embroidered on them. I completed this quilt in 2008.
